Getting paid from abroad

Three ways clients abroad pay freelancers in Kenya.

Each one gets the money to you. They differ in what can be taken on the way, and in who converts it.

  • Client in the USfee?Correspondent bankfee?Your bank in Kenya

A SWIFT wire to your bank in Kenya

Your client's bank sends an international wire. It can pass through correspondent banks that each take a fee, so less can arrive than you invoiced, and your bank may convert it to shillings at its own rate.

Local details vs a SWIFT wire
  • Client in the USPlatform balancefeeYour bank in Kenya

    A payment platform balance

Your client pays into a platform account and you withdraw to your bank. Payoneer, for example, charges 1.2% to 4% to withdraw to a bank with currency conversion.

    USD account details

Your client pays by ACH or wire from their own US bank, the way they pay a US contractor. Nothing passes through correspondent banks on the way.

Freelance platforms

Getting paid from Upwork, Fiverr or Deel.

Each of them can send your earnings to your Vezmo USD details, in early access. Their own fees and rules still apply, and the account name must match your name on the platform.

  • Upwork: Direct to U.S. Bank

    1. 1Settings › Withdrawals › Add a method › Direct to U.S. Bank
    2. 2Enter your Vezmo routing and account numbers, and pick Checking as the account type
    3. 3Use the account name that matches your verified Upwork name

Upwork: $2.99 a withdrawal with a tax address outside the US. A new method is active after 3 days; ACH arrives in 2 to 5 business days.

  • Fiverr: Bank Transfer (via Payoneer)

Fiverr: $1 a withdrawal, from $20. Fiverr lists the USD bank transfer as a wire, in 5 to 7 business days.

By ACH: free to receive. By wire: $15, $10 or $5 by plan; $25, $25 or $20 by SWIFT

  • Deel: bank transfer

    1. 1Add a bank transfer withdrawal method in USD
    2. 2Enter your Vezmo routing and account numbers and the account name

With Direct to U.S. Bank, your earnings reach Vezmo in dollars, free to receive. Upwork’s other routes in Kenya convert when you withdraw: Direct to Wallet to M‑Pesa, at a rate that includes conversion costs, and Direct to Local Bank in KES, $0.99 plus any incoming bank fee at a rate Upwork doesn’t publish. Clients you found on Upwork or Fiverr pay through the platform: both forbid moving them off it, Upwork unless its Conversion Fee is paid. Use Vezmo invoices for the clients you found yourself. Vezmo’s fees

For freelancers in Kenya

Why account details matter in Kenya.

Developers, designers and writers in Kenya work for clients in the US, Europe and the Gulf. Some of the accounts freelancers use for that don't serve Kenya: Grey's US accounts, for one, aren't offered there. With Vezmo, a client pays your invoice by card, or pays your USD account details by ACH from their own bank.

Residents of Kenya have their own rules for money received from abroad. We confirm what you can use when you sign up.

What you need to sign up
  • Your passport or another photo ID
  • A proof of address dated within the last 90 days (a national ID card doesn't count)
  • A US tax form, signed in the app (a W-8BEN for most people outside the US)
Account details you can apply for
  • USDACH and wire from US clients
  • EURSEPA and SEPA Instant from clients in Europe
  • AEDLocal transfers from clients in the UAE
  • GBPLocal transfers from clients in the UK
  • SGDLocal transfers from clients in Singapore

Confirmed for your account when you apply.
